Orthotics North York
A custom orthotic is used for a variety of reasons and is dependent upon the patients diagnosis. Our clinic uses this technology for two basic purposes. The most common usage of orthotics is to correct flat feet which are causing issues either locally at the foot or in the lower back, ankle, knee or hip.
Technically, orthotics help with proprioception; telling the brain what position your lower body is in! This allows us to walk without looking at our legs or feet. Constant communication between the feet and brain allow this to occur subconsciously.
Considering your feet have over 100 muscles and hold the weight of your entire body, it is important that you have strong support for them.
Over the counter orthotics are not nearly as comfortable as custom orthotics. Basic orthotics have generic shapes and sizes while custom made orthotics are molded to perfectly fit the shape of your feet.
Besides correcting flat feet, using the orthotics from our North York office will help correct pronation and supination.
Pronation is when your ankles tilt towards the middle of your body. Having proper foot support means reducing stress on your knees, lower back, ankles and hip. You should correct your pronation as soon as possible, especially if you are a weightlifter and do squats or dead-lifts. If your feet aren’t properly supported then you won’t be able to do your exercises with perfect form and may hurt yourself.
Supination is when your ankles are tilting away from the middle of your body. This is usually due to having extra high arches in your feet. Having uneven arches in either foot will lead to imbalances. Similar to pronation, supination is bad for your hips, knees, lower back, and ankles.
